Instructions for authors


MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
Manuscripts are sent via e-mail in .doc, .docx, .rtf, or .odt format to the Editorial Board.
The journal accepts research papers, review papers and book reviews. Published manuscripts and manuscripts submitted elsewhere are not accepted. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to republish or reproduce copyrighted material.

Manuscript preparation
Research and review papers should include the following:

  • Author’s full name, address, affiliation, and e-mail;
  • Abstract and key words in English;
  • Abstract and key words in Croatian (for non-Croatian speakers, translation will be provided by the Editorial Board);
  • Text and works cited formatted pursuant to the guidelines below.

Book reviews should include the following:

  • Author’s full name, address, affiliation, and e-mail;
  • Book review

Size limitation
Research and review papers should be between 9,000-12,000 words, including abstract, works cited and appendices. Abstract should not exceed 500 words. Book reviews should not exceed 3,000 words.

Font style and line spacing
Font is Times New Roman. Paper title is 14 pt. Manuscript is 12 pt. Block quotations (quotations above 3 lines) are 11 pt. Footnotes and texts accompanying illustrations are 10 pt. Spacing is 1.5.

In-text citations:

  • Quotations above 3 lines are placed in a free-standing block of text indented 1cm from the left margin. Free-standing quotations are written without quotation marks;
  • Use double quotation marks (“  ”) for general quotations, and single quotation marks (‘  ’) for quotations within quotations;
  • Footnotes are used only for additional explanations; 
  • Source (author – pub. year – page no.) is provided in parentheses (Flaker 1988: 199); if quoting more sources by the same author published in the same year, parentheses contain the following information: (Fališevac 2007a: 201);
  • If citing a work by two authors, last names of both authors are provided in parentheses; if citing a work by multiple authors, last name of the first author followed by “et al.” is provided in parentheses;
  • If citing web publications, year (if available) or last name of the author is provided in parentheses; if author’s name is unavailable, the title of the text is provided in parentheses;
  • If citing an e-book (no pagination available), last name of the author is provided in parentheses.
  • For indirect quotations, parentheses must contain the source consulted (qtd. in Flaker 1988: 199);
  • Instead of “ibid.”, repeat page number in parentheses;
  • For a range of page numbers, use  the en-dash instead of the hyphen;
  • Italic is used for: a) book, journal, film, play and performance titles, and titles for musical works;
    b) words in languages other than the language of the manuscript; c) non-standard words; and
    d) emphasis (do not use bold for emphasis);
    if emphasis is added to a quotation, include “emphasis mine” in parentheses.

NB: Citations from non-English sources should be translated into English. Translations may either be published or provided by the author. The latter should be indicated with “trans. mine” in parentheses. If the author decides not to use a published English translation, the reason for this should be explained in a footnote.

PEER REVIEW PROCESS
Manuscripts not meeting the above formatting requirements shall not be considered. Information about acceptance, classification and possible revision of manuscript based on  a double-blind peer review DOUBLE BLIND PEER REVIEW are sent via e-mail to the author within 40 days from the receipt of the manuscript.
The Editorial Board reserves the right to retract manuscripts not within the scope of the journal before double blind peer review process, and those manuscript that constitute bad academic practice (plagiarism, unethical research, etc.) pursuant to the Cope retraction guidelines.
The period from submission to publication is between four and six months.


MANUSCRIPT HANDLING FEES
The journal does not charge APCs, submission and/or manuscript handling fees.


COPYRIGHT

The journal retains copyright and publishing rights for all published contributions. However, authors may republish their work in another publication they author (e.g., a book chapter). Papers or excerpts published in The Art of Words may be used free of charge for all purposes, provided that the publisher and author rights are respected and properly credited. Published papers will be legally available for use without requiring author permission or fees. This license permits free, non-commercial use of any paper with appropriate citation of the author(s) and the original source of publication. These terms align with the CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license (Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License).
